AIM provides emergency financial assistance, supportive programs, and compassionate guidance for families and individuals in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

How We Serve Our Community

AIM provides emergency financial assistance and supportive programs to under-resourced families and individuals. We partner with local agencies, congregations, and volunteers to stabilize households facing eviction, utility shutoff, homelessness, mobility limitations, and unexpected crises.

Emergency Financial Assistance

Secure Seniors

Homeless Families Program

AIM helps families transitioning out of homelessness secure stable housing and begin again with dignity.

Services Include:

  • Up to $1,000 for a security deposit and $1,000 for the first month’s rent

  • Case management for up to one year

  • Assistance furnishing the home

  • Ongoing support through partner agencies

Requirements for Assistance:

If you do not meet all of the listed requirements, you will not be eligible to receive assistance.

  • Must be unhoused

  • Must have at least one minor child

  • Must have a referral from City or County DSS, PACEM, Haven, Salvation Army, or Shelter

  • Must live in Charlottesville or Albemarle county

Domestic Violence Fresh Start Fund 

AIM helps survivors of domestic violence secure safe housing and rebuild their lives with stability and support.

Services Include:

  • Up to $1,000 for a security deposit and $1,000 for the first month’s rent

  • Case management for up to one year

  • Assistance furnishing the home

  • Coordination with partner agencies for ongoing support

Requirements for Assistance:

If you do not meet all of the listed requirements, you will not be eligible to receive assistance.

  • Must have a referral from Salvation Army or Shelter

  • Must have an active protective order if self-referral

  • Must live in Charlottesville or Albemarle county

  • Domestic violence incident must less than six months old

Home Again Program

AIM provides furniture, essential household items, and sanitized mattresses to individuals and families who are working toward stable housing.

Self-referrals and agency referrals accepted. Priority is given to recipients who are referred by agencies. Furniture pickups and deliveries typically occur Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

Services Include:

  • Furniture pickup and delivery for households in need

  • State licensed mattress sanitization, the only service of its kind in the area

  • Kitchen Kits with cookware, bakeware, knives, dishes, glasses, and silverware

  • Welcome Baskets with toiletries, cleaning supplies, towels, shower curtain, paper goods, and hygiene items

  • Volunteer teams who sort, package, and assemble items for distribution


More than 500 individuals and families served over the past five years.

Emergency Financial Assistance

AIM helps seniors facing unexpected financial crises stay safely housed by providing limited emergency support for rent and utilities.

Available to seniors age 55 and older who have not received assistance from another agency. Requires proof of income, proof of emergency, picture ID, Social Security card, and the most recent bank statement. Agency and self-referrals accepted.

Services Include:

  • Emergency support for rental needs

  • Emergency support for utility needs

  • Guidance through documentation requirements

  • Connections to additional community resources when needed

Requirements for Rental Assistance:

If you do not meet all of the listed requirements, you will not be eligible to receive assistance.

  • Must be a senior aged 55 or older

  • Must live in Charlottesville or Albemarle County

  • Must not have an eviction notice

  • Must not have received funding from another agency

Requirements for Utility Assistance:

If you do not meet all of the listed requirements, you will not be eligible to receive assistance.

  • Must be a senior aged 55 or older

  • Must live in Charlottesville or Albemarle County

  • Must not have received funding from another agency

Secure Seniors

AIM supports low income seniors by providing monthly food deliveries, essential supplies, and personalized case management that promotes stability, safety, and overall well-being.

For adults age 55 and older who are low income or living with disabilities. Clients are referred by Social Services.

Services Include:

  • Monthly shelf stable food from the Food Bank

  • Monthly food support from Loaves and Fishes

  • Personal hygiene and cleaning products

  • Case management tailored to each senior’s needs

  • Help signing up for lapsed Medicaid

  • Jaunt ridership assistance

  • Access to medical supplies

  • Landlord mediation

  • Home safety inspections

  • Support with Housing Authority applications

  • Veterans referrals to partner agencies

  • Enrollment in Home Delivered Meals

  • Food pantry referrals

  • Coordinated home health services

  • Thanksgiving meals for seniors who are alone

  • Holiday gift card and small gift

  • Countless hours of compassionate care and consistent support

Volunteer Support:

  • Monthly food delivery by First Presbyterian Church volunteers on the first Saturday of each month

  • Longtime volunteer teams supported by families who involve their children in service

  • Additional deliveries provided by Westminster Presbyterian Church and college student volunteers

Safety-Net Navigation & Referral Support

AIM collaborates with agencies including DSS, City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, MAACA, PACEM, Haven, SHE Shelter, Salvation Army, and numerous local congregations. Partnerships help families access coordinated resources, avoid gaps, and move toward long-term stability.

Volunteer Your Time and Skills

Volunteers deliver food to seniors, help transport furniture, assemble household kits, and support AIM’s programs year-round. Your presence brings dignity, safety, and stability to your neighbors.
